In der Entwicklung integrierter Schaltungen (ICs) spielt die rechnergestützte Simulation eine entscheidende Rolle. Mathematische Modelle beschreiben die dynamischen Prozesse und Wechselwirkungen elektrischer Bauteile und Baugruppen. Die Lösung der Modellgleichungen im Zeit- bzw. Frequenzbereich dient der Verifikation des Schaltverhaltens, die ein unabdingbarer Schritt auf dem Weg zur Fertigung ist. Schrumpfende Strukturen, wachsende Packungsdichten und höhere Betriebsfrequenzen bedingen den Einsatz verfeinerter Modelle und die Miteinbeziehung sekundärer - oder parasitärer - Effekte. Dies führt zu hochdimensionalen Problemstellungen deren Lösung sehr viel Zeit in Anspruch nimmt und damit im Widerspruch zu einer marktgerechten Entwicklungsdauer steht.
Die Modell-Ordnungs-Reduktion sucht einen Ausweg aus diesem Dilemma zu finden. Redundanzen werden erkannt, wenig relevante Größen werden zugunsten verhaltensbestimmender vernachlässigt. Die Komplexität des Schaltungsmodells wird reduziert um durch Simulationen schneller zu Aussagen über gesuchte Charakteristika im Rahmen geeigneter Genauigkeiten zu kommen. Wissen in Wissenschaft und Industrie über verschiedene Ansätze ist weitverstreut über Europa.
In diesem drei Jahre dauernden Wissens-Transfer-Projekt sollen zunächst Kenntnisse aus der universitären Forschung in ein industrielles Umfeld eingebettet und damit der Wirtschaft zugänglich gemacht werden um deren Nutzen zu dokumentieren und Impulse für weitere Anstrengungen zu erhalten. Gewonnenes Wissen wird in einem zweiten Abschnitt an die Universität fließen. Angehenden Wissenschaftlern wird im Rahmen von Seminaren und Vorlesungen ein Einblick in die Problemstellungen in der Halbleiterindustrie vermittelt.
Vier Projektpartner befassen sich mit unterschiedlichen Ansätzen zur Modell-Ordnungs-Reduktion und versuchen mögliche Synergieeffekte auszunutzen:
